It is expected that in the year 2027, this infrastructure can begin to produce renewable hydrogen and that the pipeline is completed before the year 2030.

The President of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, held a working meeting with the heads of the companies Hive Energy and Enagás, which was also attended by the Minister of Sustainable Development, José Luis Escudero, to present the collaboration agreement that will allow the development of a green hydrogen project in Albacete.

It is expected that in the year 2027, this infrastructure can begin to produce renewable hydrogen and that the pipeline is completed before the year 2030.

In statements to the media, the director of the Hive Energy green hydrogen project in Albacete, Estanislao González, has indicated that one hundred people currently work in the infrastructure and some 20,000 hectares of land have been signed with owners. The project began to be developed in 2020 and it is the “largest green hydrogen hub in Europe” that will be built in several phases.

The first has already been presented to the Ministry, it is expected that in 2027 hydrogen production will begin in the province of Albacete and that the gas pipeline will be completed before 2030.

In the words of González, this is a project of “great interest” for the region and it is expected to generate 10,000 quality jobs. “It can be a real outrage for the province,” he stressed.

Arturo Gonzalo, the CEO of Enagás pointed out that Enagás:

Has a very important footprint in Castilla-La Mancha, with 1,115 kilometers of high-pressure gas pipelines, three concession stations and the Yela underground storage facility in Brihuega (Guadalajara).

“Now, he has said, Castilla-La Mancha aspires to have a “key role” in the production of renewable hydrogen.”

As he explained, the collaboration agreement between Enagás, Hive Energy and the JCCM, “intends to ensure the transport of green hydrogen from Albacete to the Mediterranean. The Levante axis is included in the proposals for European projects of common interest that Enagás expects to be up and running by 2030”.

For his part, the JCCM Minister of Sustainable Development, José Luis Escudero, has indicated that the objective of the collaboration agreement is to work together so that Europe assumes as a priority project, especially the Albacete-Valencia branch, “which would give to Castilla-La Mancha a competitive advantage with other regions”.

It is, according to Escudero, “a project of great interest to the autonomous community, which intends to bet on renewable hydrogen”, noting that “this is a priority that the regional executive is working on throughout this legislature”.

The counselor explained that there are two requirements for renewable hydrogen to become a reality: “to have a powerful renewable energy park, and in this, Castilla-La Mancha is a leader, both in photovoltaic and wind power, and to have a network infrastructure to transport and store the element”, so the collaboration agreement “responds to ensuring that these objectives are met, making Albacete a powerful ‘hub’ in terms of renewable hydrogen and that the transport and storage network in Spain possible throughout the year 2030”, he concluded.
